Sure, you've heard the old phrase "Those who can't DO, Teach." Not buying it.
THE CREFELD SCHOOL
Several years ago I came to a crossroads artistically and financially where I had to figure out something else to do to make ends meet and not still have time to play an occasional gig or tour. A friend who worked at a small private school in the Philly area invited me to come talk about helping to put together some kind of music class for 13-18 year old high school kids. That was the beginning of a long relationship I've had with The Crefeld School.
MUSIC & MENTORSHIP: Aspiring Composers Program
I have also had the privilege of mentoring much younger kids from the under served areas of West and North Philadelphia under the banner of The Music & Mentorship Program. The Intercultural Music and Mentorship program provides unique opportunities for community youth and families of diverse cultural groups to explore and develop their musical creativity, self – expression, and self – esteem through musical appreciation and instruction. Started by Intercultural Family Services, Inc. in 1998 in response to the Philadelphia public school system cutbacks in arts education, the program’s popularity and momentum have grown quickly. Today, between the months of September and June, each Saturday morning between 80 and 150 students attend M&M to listen, learn, practice and play music.
This, as well lead to opportunities to meet and work with a group of very talented and giving artists in the area who also commit their time to the program. I also was able to obtain a Community Partners grant from The American Composers Forum which allowed me to produce an entire record with the kids and provide them with many other, otherwise unavailable music related experiences. Not gonna lie....they need your support if your feelin' philanthropic... donate instruments and/or funding to The Music & Mentorship Program.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
I have given countless private lessons on piano and guitar but my favorite is to work with people who are learning to express themselves through songwriting.
